The type of turf you choose directly influences not only the appearance of your lawn but also its resilience and longevity. Certain turf types like Kikuyu are more suited to heavy foot traffic areas and sports fields. Others like Buffalo grass are more shade tolerant, making them a good choice for gardens with large trees. The choice of turf also affects your lawn’s water and maintenance requirements.
Maintaining a healthy and attractive turf requires regular care. This includes watering, which should be deep and infrequent to encourage strong root growth. Mowing should be done at the recommended height for your chosen turf variety, removing only one-third of the leaf blade at a time. Fertilising should occur several times a year, typically in spring and autumn, to provide the turf with essential nutrients. Timely and appropriate action against weeds, pests and diseases is also an important aspect of lawn maintenance.
If your lawn shows signs of disease such as discolouration, patchiness or unusual growth patterns, it’s important to identify and address the issue promptly. Possible causes include fungal diseases, pests or poor maintenance practices. At Ryans Turf, we will help you identify the issue and recommend treatment options, which may involve adjusting your watering or fertilisation practices.
Absolutely! Turf is extremely versatile and can be used for a wide range of applications besides home lawns. It’s commonly used for sports fields due to the ability of certain varieties to withstand heavy use and recover quickly from damage. Turf is also frequently installed in public parks, golf courses, commercial properties and more. The choice of turf will depend on the specific demands of these different settings such as tolerance to wear, drought or shade, growth rate and maintenance needs.
The timing for your lawn’s first mow usually falls between 10 to 21 days after installation, influenced by the season. Warmer conditions can accelerate root growth, particularly if you use products like our turf launcher to improve early root establishment. To check if your lawn is ready for mowing, try lifting the edge of the turf mat. If it remains firm, it’s time for a mow. Don’t forget to water your lawn immediately after the first mow. Also, avoid letting your lawn grow too long before its initial mow. For lawns situated in shadier areas, a slightly longer length may be appropriate.
On the South Coast, turf installation can be done throughout the year with most grass varieties. However, spring is the most favourable time due to its optimal conditions. Turf installation is possible even in summer, but it requires more labour and frequent watering. Therefore, it’s recommended to avoid installing turf in summer, particularly in December and January, if possible.
There’s no need to top dress newly laid lawns if the installation and preparation have been done correctly. Top dressing helps enhance soil nutrients or level the ground. If you choose to top dress, ensure the grass leaves remain visible. Piling on too much can suffocate your lawn. If you need to raise any low areas, do this gradually over time. Also, if your top dressing contains fertilisers, avoid using extra products as they may be unnecessary and potentially harmful.
When preparing a new area, remember to consider the height of any hard surfaces alongside your new lawn. This will define the level you are working with for the best result. You will need to allow 45mm for our Buffalo varieties & 35mm for Kikuyu to sit on top of the underlay.
Ideally, your turf needs to be laid within 24 hours of receiving it. In the cooler months it can last longer but getting it down as soon as you can will ensure the best result for the lawn in the long run.
This usually takes place within 10 to 21 days, depending on the season. The warmer time of the year it will take root faster especially if you use our turf launcher to promote early root establishment. To test to see if your lawn is ready for a mow, just grab hold of the turf mat edge and see if you can lift it, if it doesn’t lift, then you can mow. Always best to give your lawn a drink straight after the first mow. Don’t let your lawn get too long before its first mow. If your lawn is in quite a bit of shade, it could probably be left a bit longer.
You should maintain your Sir Walter, Palmetto or Sapphire buffalo lawn to a 35mm height (usually the 3rd or 4th notch from the bottom). If your lawn is in plenty of shade, raise the mower height to between 50 & 75mm (5th or 6th notch on your mower) and mow less frequently. Kikuyu can be cut to 25 & 50mm.
50 to 100mm of underlay is ideal. Use a good quality underlay to suit your environment. If you’re on poor sandy soil, definitely use a compost over a sandy loam. This will keep moisture where it’s needed most (at the roots) & save all of your watering efforts from draining away!
On the South Coast, we can cut & install most grasses all year round however for obvious reasons, Spring is the ideal time. Here on the South Coast we can lay lawns all year round, however we do find laying in the summer months is just hard work and requires a lot more watering, so for that reason we suggest to avoid December and January if possible.
No, if you do your preparation correctly & lay your rolls properly there is no need to top dress. Top dressing is only needed to improve the nutrients in the soil or to even out your levels. When top dressing, make sure you can still see the leaves of the grass. Don’t pile it on to fill the low sections, you will suffocate it! If there are any deep parts that need to be raised, do it gradually. Stockpile some soil & add to it as the growth allows over time. If the top dressing you use has fertilisers (which is often the case), don’t used additional products as it not necessarily & can do more damage than good. Work the soil down into the leaves & water it well.
Our roll sizes vary according to the conditions. Higher water content makes the rolls heavier so if there’s been a lot of rain, we will generally cut shorter lengths as they are easier to handle. The width is always 600mm lengths can vary between 1219mm 1499mm for buffalo varieties but Kikuyu is usually 600mm x 1651mm giving you 1m2 per roll. We sell by the square metre so the coverage will always be the same, it’s just the quantity of rolls that may differ from time to time. The thickness is approximately 35mm so remember to allow for this when doing your prep!
Each roll can weigh from 15kg-20kg. A pallet of 50m2 can weigh from 700kg- 1,000kg (1T).
Visit the calculator on our website. This will provide step by step information and assistance to ensure the correct measurements. We do recommend allowing an extra 5% for any odd areas or shapes cuts.

Water, water, water!
Please contact us for further information as this step can vary depending on your chosen turf variety.
You should be watering twice daily (morning evening) until your lawn is fully established. Ensure your turf receives a deep soaking both morning and evening, before reducing the amount to once every 2 or 3 days in the following weeks. Timing can vary depending on your turf variety and seasonal changes. Quick tip; place a glass on your lawn and wait until it is half full for each watering. This ensures your turf receives the accurate dose of water for each application.
Depending on the time of year (season), the weather, and the variety of turf you have chosen the establishment period will vary. It can be anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months. A good identification will be when you cannot easily lift your turf from the ground, meaning the roots have taken.
Mowing a new lawn should be undertaken when no new rolls of turf can be picked up, or when every roll has established into the turf underlay. Mow at the highest setting for the first couple of mows, never cutting more than one third of the blade at a time.
Depending on your chosen turf variety, we recommend fertilising your lawn at the change of every season. Turf booster is available in 5kg & 10kg buckets.
This can be easily solved by adding dog rocks to your dog’s water bowl and the burn patches should stop. These are available for purchase from most pet supply stores.
When Sir Walter is hungry or in distress it will shoot out seed heads. This is Sir Walter’s way of going into survival mode and lets you know that it requires a feed with our turf booster fertiliser and a good watering.
